Insert the Windows XP setup CD and restart the computer.
Press any key to boot from the CD.
Press R to access Repair Console.
Enter the Administrator password.
Type exit and remove your CD: exit.
Press Enter.
Restart your computer.

Boot into the Recovery Console using a Windows XP CD.
Backup the current SOFTWARE and SYSTEM registry hives.
Navigate to the directory where the system restore files are being kept.
In the _restore directory, there are a bunch of directories starting with RP.
Inside the restore point directory, there is a folder titled snapshot.
Type exit to close the Recovery Console and restart your computer.

To repair a corrupted registry, you must use the Windows XP Console Update. This approach requires you to practice from the Windows XP installation CD, or boot directly from the Recovery Console if installed. Follow these steps to launch the Recovery Console from the Windows XP installation disc.

Repair your Windows installation from the Recovery Console. Boot from the expected Windows XP installation CD (not the network installation CD). Press R on the first generation screen to work with Windows with the Recovery Console. Select the new Windows installation you want to restore by entering its handle and then press Enter.

The boot screen displays three options: “To organize Windows XP, press ENTER”, “To repair a Windows XP installation that works with the Recovery Console, press R”. “To exit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.” when entering the recovery console, be sure to select the installation of Windows XP you want to connect to

In the “Select a working system to start:” message, select Microsoft Windows XP Recovery Console.
